Out on the snow-covered Alaskan tundra, US Army Pacific is pushing its soldiers to prepare to fight in subzero temperatures and hostile, unpredictable environments. "It's a harsh environment," Maj. Gen. Brian S. Eifler told Business Insider in an in-person interview at Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks. Some told Business Insider the Arctic was the most difficult environment to fight in, while others noted it took a specific type of mindset to survive there, let alone excel. Maj. Joseph Gaskin told Business Insider, explaining that "we don't have all the answers for this environment."

California has long championed renewable energy, but a change in the state’s policies last year has led to a sharp decline in the installation of residential rooftop solar in the state. Thousands of companies — including installers, manufacturers and distributors — are reeling from the new policy, which took effect in April and greatly reduced incentives that had encouraged homeowners to install solar panels. Since the change, sales of rooftop solar installations in California dropped as much as 85 percent in some months of 2023 from a year earlier, according to a report by Ohm Analytics, a research firm that tracks the solar marketplace. Industry groups project that installations in the state will drop more than 40 percent this year and continue to decline through 2028. “The solar installations are off a ton,” said Michael Wara, a senior research scholar at Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment.

A Capitol rioter who toted a Confederate flag on January 6, 2021 was sentenced on Thursday. A federal judge sentenced Kevin Seefried to 36 months in prison. McFadden sentenced the younger Seefried to 24 months in prison in October. Widely circulated images of Seefried wielding a Confederate flag in the Capitol halls have emerged as some of the most shocking from the January 6 attack. During Thursday's sentencing, McFadden focused on Goodman's encounter with Seefried, saying "threatening" an African American police officer with a Confederate flag was "demeaning," "especially shocking" and "deeply offensive."
